This Sunday (24th May) is our first vision day. Some of the material will make its way online in the next week or so. However, I thought I’d pre-empt some questions you may have regarding our decision to ask those who are regular among us to give an anonymous indication of how much they plan to give in the coming financial year.
Why pledges?
First, it encourages thoughtful, planned and regular giving (1 Corinthians 9:7). In the busyness of life, is easy to forget to give or to give only what is left after other priorities have been met.
(If you’d like help in thinking through your giving to unichurch southside and beyond, the Guidelines for Giving booklet will provide some pointers.)
Second, it helps the board of unichurch and the southside admin committee to be responsible in their planning and management of finances.
Why anonymous?
Not to spare embarrassment but to avoid pride. Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6:1-4 is that secrecy safeguards sincerity. We mustn’t give so that others will see and be impressed. The question, “Why do I need to give in secret?” is helpful in diagnosing our attitude to giving.
